청춘

청춘

청춘이란 인생의 어느 기간을 말하는 것이 아니라 마음의 상태를 말한다.

그것은 장미 빛 용모, 앵두 같은 입술, 나긋나긋한 자태가 아니라

강인한 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타는 열정을 말한다.  

 

청춘이란 인생의 깊은 샘에서 솟는 신선한 정신,

두려움을 물리치는 용기, 안이 함을 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미한다.

때로는 이십 세 청년보다 육십 세 된 사람에게 청춘이 있다.

나이를 먹는다고 늙는 것이 아니다. 이상을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙는 것이다.

세월은 주름살을 늘게 하지만 열정을 가진 마음을 시들게는 하지는 못한다.

고뇌, 공포, 실망 때문에 기력이 땅으로 기어들고

마음이 시들어 버리는 것이다.  

 

육십 세이 든, 십육 세 이든 모든 사람의 가슴속에는

놀라움에 끌리는 마음, 어린아이와 같은 미지에 대한 끝없는 탐구심,

삶에서 환희를 얻고자 하는 열망이 있다.

그대와 나의 가슴속에는 남이 잘 보이지 않는 무엇이 간직되어 있다.

아름다움, 희망, 희열, 용기, 영감의 세계에서 얻는 힘!

이 모든 것을 가지고 있는 한 언제 까지나 그대는 젊음을 유지할 것이다.  

 

영감이 끊어져 정신이 냉소라는 눈에 파묻히고, 비탄이란 얼음에 갇힌 사람은 비록 나이가 이십 세라 할지라도 이미 늙은이와 다름없다.

그러나 머리를 드높여 희망이란 파도를 탈수 있는 한,

그대는 팔십 세 일지라도 영원히 청춘으로 남을 것이다.                       

 

 

 

사무엘 울만은 유대인으로 獨逸에서 태어나 幼年期를 보낸 후 부모를 따라 미국으로 이민하여 市議會 議員, 회사 사장, 敎育委員, 평신도 율법사 등 많은 경력을 거치며 정열적인 삶을 살았다고 한다. ‘靑春’은 사무엘 울만이 생활했던 미국보다 일본에서 더 알려졌는데

이는 맥아더 장군이 1945년 일본 주둔군 사령관으로 있으면서 자기 사무실 벽에 이 詩를 걸어놓고 默想하였다고 하여, 특히 전후 일본인 기업인 사이에서 사랑을 받았다. 패전 후 경제복구를 하는 일본인들에게 새로운 활력소 구실을 한 것으로 보인다.  

 

 

 

Youth

Youth is not a time of life;

it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the refreshness of the deep springs of life.  

 

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.  

 

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;

so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power

from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.  

 

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of

cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at

twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism,

there is hope you may die young at eighty.

"Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; These words, written by Samuel Ullman of Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 70-plus, Ullman wrote the poetic essay, "Youth," which became a favorite of General Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur placed a version of the poem on the wall of his office in Tokyo when he became Supreme Allied Commander in Japan, and he often quoted from the poem in his speeches. General MacArthur's influence gave the poem popularity throughout Japan and provided the people of that nation with spiritual energy to pursue rebuilding their own lives and that of their nation. Ullman died in his chosen hometown in 1924 at the age of 84 never knowing that his poetic essay would be quoted by politicians and generals, appear in Dear Abby and Ann Landers columns, and be read and loved by people all across the world.
