오직 사랑을 위해서만 사랑해 주셔요.  

 

그리고 부디

「미소 때문에, 미모 때문에, 부드러운 말씨 때문에,

그리고 또 내생각과 잘 어울리는 재치 있는 생각 때문에,

그래서 그런 날엔 나에게 느긋한 즐거움을 주었기 때문에

저 여인을 사랑 한다」고는

정말이지 말하지 마셔요.  

 

이러한 것들은,

임이여! 그 자체가 변하거나

당신을 위해 변하기도 한답니다.

그렇게 짜진 사랑은

그처럼 풀려 버리기도 한답니다.

내 뺨의 눈물을 닦아 주는 당신의

사랑어린 연민으로도

That falls in well with mine, and certes brought

A sense of pleasant ease on such a day'--- 

 

For these things in themselves, Beloved, may

Be changed, or change for thee,-and love,

so wrought,

May be unwrought so. Neither love for

Thine own dear pity's wiping my cheeks dry,---  

 

A creature might forget to weep, who bore

Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby!

but love me for love's sake, that evermore

Thou must love on, through love's eternity  

 

 

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)

English poet, the wife of Robert Browning, the most respected and successful woman poet of the Victorian period. Elizabeth Browning was considered seriously for the laureateship that eventually was awarded to Tennyson in 1850. Her greatest work, SONNETS FROM THE PORTUGUESE (1850), is a sequence of love sonnets addresses to her husband. Browning's vivid intelligence and ethereal physical appearance made a lifelong impression to Ruskin, Carlyle, Thackeray, Rossetti, Hawthorne, and many others.
