천사들의 고민

천사들의 고민 

 

 

 

어느 날 천사들이 회의를 열었다.

“우리는 지금 행복합니다만, 만약 인간들이 성스러워 져서 하늘나라까지 올라와 우리의 행복을 가져가 버릴까 걱정입니다. 그러면 천사들만의 행복은 끝나버리는 것이지요.” 천사들 끼리 말하기를

“살인이나 도둑질이나 등등을 하지 않는다면, 인간들도 행복을 가질 수 있을 겁니다.” 어떻게 해야 되지요?”

천사들은 행복과 신성을 두 개의 황금 단지에 넣어 어딘가에 감추어 놓는 토의를 하였다. “어디에 놓아야 할까?”

“만약 우리가 최고로 높은 산꼭대기에 숨기더라도, 인간은 에베레스트 산이라도 올라와 찾을 거예요” 그럼 “구름 뒤에 숨기면 어떨까요?”

“안돼요, 인간들은 비행기를 만들어, 다른 행성에도 여행을 할 정도란 말이야.”“그럼 깊은 바다에 감춘다면 아마 인간들은 찾아내지 못하지 않을까요.”“아니야 찾아낼 거예요” 나이 많은 천사가 연이어 말하기를

“인간은 잠수함을 만들어 바다 바닥까지 내려 갈수 있을 걸”

“숲속에 감춰 보시지” 또 다른 천사가 말했다.

“인간은 숲속 수많은 나무를 쓰러뜨려 종이를 만들고, 프린트를 해서,

불량한 언어와 그림들로 책을 만들지” 어떤 천사는 눈물을 글썽였다.  

 

가장 나이 많은 천사가 여러 천사들의 의견을 듣고 한참 동안 생각을 한 후

“여러분, 여러 의견들은 모두 훌륭합니다,

우리는 행복과 신성을 인간의 마음속에 감추어 두기로 하겠습니다.

지상에 인간들 이란 자기 자신을 돌아보는 자는 없으니까요.” 

 

 

 

ANGELS' DILEMMA   

 

Angels conferred in heaven one day, "We are happy but are fearful that our heavenly post would be lost if humans became saintly. Our business in heaven would be over," said one Angel to another. "Humans can achieve happiness, if they do not commit murder or steal and so on."  

 

"Who would need us?" replied an Angel. The Angels thereby devised a plan to hide Happiness and Divinity in two golden jugs. "Where shall we put the jugs?" asked one Angel. "If we hide them at the top of the highest mountain, man will surely climb Mt. Everest and find it" answered an Angel. "The jugs could be hidden behind the clouds," replied another Angel. "No. Man will invent aircraft's that will travel to other planets. He will certainly find the jugs there," said another Angel. "If the jugs were hidden in the deepest ocean, Man would not find them there." "Yes he would," reiterated an elder Angel, "Man will invent submarines that descend to the bottom of the ocean." "Hide the jugs in the forest," responded one Angel. "Man will destroy countless trees to manufacture paper that prints papers and books filled with violent words and pictures," said one Angel with tears in his eyes.  

 

The eldest Angel spoke after a silent meditation in which he listened to the other's opinions.

"My friends, your suggestions are excellent. We will conceal Happiness and Divinity inside Man's heart. No one on Earth would think to look within himself."
