인생찬가 (A Psalm of Life)

슬픈 어조로 나에게 말하지 말라

인생은 한갓 헛된 꿈에 불과하다고!

잠자는 영혼은 죽은 것이어니

만물은 외양의 모습 그데로가 아니다.

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,

Life is but an empty dream!

For the soul is dead that slumbers,

and things are not what they seem.

 

인생은 진실이다! 인생은 진지하다

무덤이 그 종말이 될 수는 없다.

"너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가라."

이 말은 영혼에 대해 한 말은 아니다.

Life is real! life is earnest!

And the grave is not it's goal;

Dust thou art, to dust returnest,

was not spoken of the soul.

 

우리가 가야 할 곳, 또한 가는 길은

향락도 아니요 슬픔도 아니다.

저마다 내일이 오늘 보다 낫도록

행동하는 그것이 목적이요 길이다

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow

is our destined and or way;

but to act, that each tomorrow

find us further than today.

 

예술은 길고 인생은 빨리 간다.

우리의 심장은 튼튼하고 용감하나

싸맨 북소리 처럼 둔탁하게

무덤향한 장송곡을 치고 있나니.

Art is long, and time is fleeting,

and our hearts, though stout and brave,

still, like muffled drums, are beating

funeral marches to the grave.

 

 

 

이 세상 넓고 넓은 싸움터에서

인생의 야영지에서

말 없이 쫓기는 짐승처럼 되지 말고

싸움에 이기는 영웅이 되라.

In the world's broad field of battle,

in the bivouac of life,

be not like dumb, driven cattle!

Be a hero in the strife!

 

아무리 즐거워도 "미래"를 믿지 말라!

죽은 "과거"는 죽은 채 매장하라!

활동하라, 살아있는 "현재"에 활동하라!

안에는 마음이 위에는 하느님이 있다.

Trust no future, howe'er pleasant!

Let the dead past bury its dead!

Act-act in the living present!

Heart within, and God o'erhead!

 

위인들의 생애는 우리를 깨우치느니,

우리도 장엄한 삶을 이룰 수 있고

우리가 떠나간 시간의 모래 위에

발자취를 남길 수가 있느니라.

Lives of great men all remind us

we can make our lives sublime,

and, departing, leave behind us

footprints on the sand of time-

 

그 발자취는 뒷날에 다른 사람이,

장엄한 인생의 바다를 건너가다가

파선되어 버려진 형제가 보고

다시금 용기를 얻게 될지니.

Footprints, that perhaps another,

sailing o'er life's solemn main,

a forlorn and shipwrecked brother,

seeing, shall take heart again.

 

우리 모두 일어나 일하지 않으려나,

어떤 운명인들 이겨낼 용기를 지니고,

끊임없이 성취하고 계속 추구하면서

일하며 기다림을 배우지 않으려나.

Let us, then , be up and doing,

with a heart for any fate;

still achieving, still pursuing,

learn to labor and to wate.
