이제 의업에 종사할 허락을 받음에

나의 생애를 인류 봉사에 바칠 것을 엄숙히 서약하노라.

나의 은사에 대하여 존경과 감사를 드리겠노라.

나의 양심과 품위를 가지고 의술을 베풀겠노라.

나는 환자의 건강과 생명을 첫째로 생각하겠노라.

나는 환자가 나에게 알려준 모든 것에 대하여 비밀을 지키겠노라.

나는 의업의 고귀한 전통과 명예를 유지하겠노라.

나는 동업자를 형제처럼 여기겠노라.

나는 인종, 종교, 국적, 정당관계 도는 사회적 지위 여하를 초월하여 오직 환자에 대한 나의의무를 지키겠노라.

나는 인간의 생명을 그 수태된 때로부터 더 없이 존중하겠노라.

나는 비록 위협을 당할 지라도 나의 지식을

안도에 어긋나게 쓰지 않겠노라.

나는 자유 의사로서 나의 명예를 걸고 위의 서약을 하노라.  

 

 

의성(醫聖)으로 불리는 그리스 의사 '히포크라테스'에 의해서 기원전 6세기에서 기원후 1세기에 걸쳐 쓰여 졌을 것으로 보는 이 선서는 가장 오래되고 대표적인 의학윤리 문서의 하나이다. 오늘날은 원문보다 이를 조금씩 수정한 약식 선서가 많이 읽히고 있다. 우리나라에서 의과대학 졸업 시 쓰이는 선서문도 사실은 원문을 크게 변형한 '제네바' 선언문이다.

히포크라테스가 남긴 금언 가운데 하나로 “인생은 짧고 예술은 길다”라는 말이 있다.

이 금언의 ‘예술’은 본디 그리스어 ‘테크네’를 가리키는데, 그 말이 영어의 ‘아트’(art)로 옮겨져 오늘날 예술을 지칭하는 것이 되고 말았다 한다. 테크네’의 애초의 뜻을 따지면 의술’이었다고 한다고 하니, 의술을 초자연적인 능력이 아닌 인간의 ‘기술’ 또는 ‘과학’으로 보는 혁명적 사고를 품고 있다.  

 

 

HIPPOCRATIC OATH

This modified "Hippocratic Oath"

was composed in 1893 by Mrs. Lystra E. Gretter   

 

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully.   

 

I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug.   

 

I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.   

 

With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.   

  

 

The Hippocratic Oath (Fifth century, B.C.) 

 

 

I swear by Apollo the physician, by Aesculapius, and Health, and All-heal, and all the gods and goddesses, that according to my ability and my judgment, I will keep this Oath and this stipulation--to reckon him who taught me this Art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my substance with him, and relieve his necessities if required; to look upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers, and to teach them this Art, if they wish to learn it, without fee or stipulation;

and that by precept, lecture, and every mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the Art to my own sons, and of my teachers, and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of medicine, but to none others.  

 

 

I will follow that system or regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous.

I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and practice my Art. I will not cut persons labouring under the stone, but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption;

and, further, from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves Whatever, in connection with my professional service, or not in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret.

While I continue to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the Art, respected by all men, in all times.

But should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot.
