진주에서 배우는 것 

 

내가 할 이야긴, 진주에 관한 것

자기의 살 속에 모래가 박혀버린 진주조개

조그만 입자, 비록 보통 모래알 하나였지만

조개에겐 커다란 고통을 안겨 주었다지요.  

 

자, 이렇게 비참한 운명의 장난

기구한 삶에 조개는 절망하였을 까요?

신의 섭리를 욕하면서,

나를 보호해 줬어야 하잖아요! 하고

바다를 원망하였을까요?  

 

아니었습니다.

조개는 스스로에게 일렀습니다.

누워있어야 하는 조게이기에

내게서 스스로 모래를 빼 낼 수 는 없어

그러니 나는 이 기회를 살려가야만 해  

 

세월은 흘러갔고

항상 시간이 해결하듯

운명의 날은 결정적으로 닥아 왔어요.

그렇게 고통 주던 모래알은

너무나 아름다운 진주로 바뀌었어요.

조개가 준 교훈은

삼켜버린 하찮은 모래로

정말 위대한 것을 할 수 있지 않나요?  

 

우리의 피부에 무언가가 박힌다면

우리가 할 수 있는 일이란 과연 무엇일까요. 

 

 

 진주는 깊은 바다 속에서 살고 있는 조개껍데기 속에서 만들어 진다.

모래 알갱이가 부드럽고 연한 조갯살 속으로 침투 하면,

조개는 그 아픔을 사키기 위해 진주층(nacre)라고 하는

여러 층의 선석(aragonite)들이 자극제의 주위에 분비되어 점차적으로 고형의 진주가 형성된다. 이 중첩되는 층들로부터의 반사광은 진주 특유의 광택(orient of pearl)이라고도 하는 특유의 무지개 빛 광택을 낸다.

7년 동안 한 층 한 층 계속해서 그 아픔을 덮어 간다.

그렇게 해서 어둠 속에서 아름답고 찬란한 진주가 탄생되는 것이다.

그 아픔과 치유의 반복 과정을 겪은 조개만이 아름답고 소중한 진주를 만들어 내는 것이다. 당신은 이 진주가 선사하는 소중한 삶의 진리를 이해할 수 있는가?

삶 속에서 원치 않는 아픔과 사건이 생길 때, 당신 역시 그 아픔을 사키고 녹일 수 있어야 한다. 상처에서 교훈을 얻고 아픔의 시험을 통과할 때마다 당신은 아름다운 진주를 만들어 낼 수 있을 것이다.  

 

 

 

LESSONS FROM AN OYSTER 

 

There once was an oyster

Whose story I tell,

Who found that some sand

Had got into his shell.   

 

It was only a grain,

but it gave him great pain.

For oysters have feelings

Although they're so plain.  

 

Now, did he berate

the harsh workings of fate

That had brought him

To such a deplorable state?   

 

Did he curse at the government,

Cry for election,

And claim that the sea should

Have given him protection?   

 

'No,' he said to himself

As he lay on a shell,

Since I cannot remove it,

I shall try to improve it.   

 

Now the years have rolled around,

As the years always do,

And he came to his ultimate

Destiny ?stew.   

 

And the small grain of sand

That had bothered him so

Was a beautiful pearl

All richly aglow.   

 

Now the tale has a moral,

for isn't it grand

What an oyster can do

With a morsel of sand?   

 

What couldn't we do

If we'd only begin

With some of the things

That get under our skin.  

 

 

Genuine pearls come from the insides of certain kinds of oysters that live at the bottom of the sea. How does an oyster produce a pearl? A tiny piece of sand gets into the soft insides of the oyster when the oyster's shell is partly open. The sand begins to bother the oyster. What to do? The oyster has no hands to brush the sand away, nor any other means of getting rid of it. So, gradually the oyster covers the piece of sand with layer after layer of pearl, which comes from the inside of its own shell. Sometimes as long as seven years pass before the sand is completely covered and no longer bothers the oyster.

Oysters that contain pearls are usually different in appearance from other oysters. Pearl oysters are badly shaped, and the shells do not fit together well. Indeed, the uglier the oyster is, the more likely it is to have a magnificent pearl within it!
