임금님의 고속도로 

 

 

 

한 옛날, 어떤 임금님이 자기 왕국에 사는 백성들을 위해 훌륭한 고속도로를 만들고 있었다. 드디어 고속도로 공사가 종료되었고, 일반 백성들에게 오픈되기 전에 임금님은 한 가지 경주를 하기로 결심했다. 임금님은 참여를 원하는 사람이면 가급적 많은 백성들을 참여하게 했다. 경주내용은 누가 고속도로에서 가장 잘 달렸는가를 보는 것이었으며, 우승자에게는 황금상자를 주도록 되어 있었다. 시합 날은 모든 백성이 나왔다. 백성들 중에는 화려한 경주용 마차를 끌고 온 이도 있었고, 화려한 옷을 입고 오기도 하고, 호화로운 여행을 위해 맛있는 음식을 준비해 온 이도 있었다. 어떤 이는 장거리 경주에서 아주 탄탄한 신발을 신고 그들의 기량을 충분히 발휘하기도 했다.

참가자 들은 왼 종일 고속도로를 따라 달렸고, 모두는 마지막 결승지점에 도착하자, 임금님께 불평을 늘어놓았는바, 중간에 어떤 지점에 공사 후 치우지 않는 많은 돌 더미와 잔유물이 길을 막아 그들의 경주에 장애 요소가 되었다고 아뢰었다.

날이 저물자, 한 경주자가 결승점을 가까스로 통과하여 임금님 쪽으로 걸어갔다. 그는 지쳐있었고 그리고 옷은 더러워 졌지만, 임금님께 최대의 존경을 표명하며, 작은 금 궤짝을 전해 올려드렸다. 그는 아뢰기를 “저는 경주를 중지하고 길을 막고 있는 돌 더미 와 잔유물을 치워 길을 틔웠습니다. 그랬더니 돌 더미 아래 이 금 궤짝이 있었습니다. 이 금 궤짝을 원 소유주에게 돌려주시옵소서.”임금님이 명하시기를,

“자네가 소유주 일세.”

이 경주자가 삼가 아뢰기를

“아닙니다, 제 것이 아니옵니다. 임금님, 저는 결코 이런 큰돈을 가진 적이 없습니다.”

임금님이 이르시길,

“아니야 자네 몫이야. 이 금 궤짝은 경주에서 우승한 상금이요. 경주에서 우승한 사람은 뒤 사람들을 위해 보다 더 좋은 고속도로를 만들어 가는 사람이란다. 이런 지혜를 살아가면서 항상 염두에 두라!” 

 

 

 

The King's Highway  

 

Once upon a time, a king had a great highway built for the people who lived in his kingdom. After it was completed, but before it was opened to the public, the king decided to have a contest. He invited as many of his subjects as desired to participate. The challenge was to see who could travel the highway the best, and the winner was to recieve a box of gold.

On the day of the contest, all the people came. Some of them had fine chariots, some had fine clothing and fancy food to make the trip a luxurious journey. Some wore their sturdiest shoes and ran along the highway on their feet to show their skill. All day they traveled the highway, and each one, when he arrived at the end, complained to the king about a large pile of rocks and debris that had been left almost blocking the road at one point, and that got in their way and hindered their travel. At the end of the day, a lone traveler crossed the finish line warily and walked over to the king. He was tired and dirty, but he addressed the king with great respect and handed him a small chest of gold. He said,

"I stopped along the way to clear a pile of rocks and debris that was blocking the road. This chest of gold was under it all. Please have it returned to its rightful owner."

The king replied, "You are the rightful owner."

"Oh no," said the traveler, "This is not mine. I've never known such money."

"Oh yes," said the king, "you've earned this gold, for you won my contest.

He who travels the road best is he who makes the road better for those

who will follow. Remember those words of wisdom as you travel the road of life! "
