행복의 비밀에 관하여 

 

 

어떤 장사꾼이 세상에 가장 저명한 현자에게 자기 아들을 보내어

행복의 비밀을 배워 오라고 했답니다.

아들은 사막에서 40일이나 방황 한 후

산꼭대기에 있는 아름다운 궁에 이르렀습니다.

그곳이 현자가 사는 집이었어요.

성인이나 영웅이 사는 궁 이라기보다는 마당을 들어서자

여러 무리의 사람들이 붐비는 곳이라는 것을 알았습니다.

무역상들이 왔다 갔다 하고,

구석에는 사람들이 대화를 나누는 것도 보이고,

경음악이 연주되고 있었으며

테이블 위에는 세상의 맛좋은 음식은 모두 다 놓여 있었습니다.

현자는 여러 사람들과 말을 나누고 있었음으로,

현자의 눈에 띄기 까지 소년은 두 시간이나 기다려야 했습니다.  

 

“현자는 소년이 찾아온 이유를 유심히 들었습니다.

그리고는 행복의 비밀을 알려 주기에는 지금 시간이 없다고 했습니다.

소년에게 집이나 둘러보도록 하면서 2시간 후에 오라고 했습니다.

구경하는 동안

내가 하나 제안을 하지, 하고서는 숟가락을 들라 한 후,

숟가락에 기름 두 방울을 떨어뜨렸습니다.

집 구경하는 동안 이 기름을 쏟지 말게나.

소년은 집의 계단을 이리 저리를 오르락내리락 하면서,

숟가락에 온통 눈길을 주었습니다.

두 시간 후 소년은 현자가 있는 곳으로 다시 돌아 왔습니다.  

 

자, 그럼 식당 벽에 걸려 있는 페르시아 자수품을 잘 보았느냐?

전문 정원사가 십년이상 걸려 만든 정원은 보았느냐?

서재에 있는 양피지 책을 보았느냐?

소년은 당황했고 사실은 아무것도 보지 못했다고 했습니다.

소년의 관심은 현자가 시킨 데로

숟가락의 기름을 쏟지 않도록 하는 것이었습니다.

그럼 다시 가서 세상에서 제일 좋은 대리석을 구경하고 오너라.

자넨 상대의 집도 보지 않는 상태에서 나를 신뢰 할 수는 없지.   

 

소년은 안도의 숨을 쉬고, 스푼을 들고 집안을 둘러보기 시작했으며,

이번에는 천장이며 벽이며 모두를 보았습니다.

정원도 보았으며,

주위의 산야도 보고, 꽃들도 보며, 닥치는 대로 음식 맛 도 보았습니다.

현자에게 와서는 지금까지 자기가 보았던 것들을 모두 얘기했습니다.

그런데 당부했던 숟가락의 기름은 어디에 갔어?

현자는 물었습니다.

소년이 숟가락을 내려다보니 거기에는 기름이 없었습니다.

내가 한마디 충고하지 라고 현자가 말했습니다.

행복 찾기의 비밀이란 대리석 세상도 구경하면서

또한 숟가락 속의 기름방울도 잊지 않는 것이란 말일세!

ABOUT SECRET OF HAPPINESS 

 

 

 

A certain shopkeeper sent his son to learn about the secret of happiness from the wisest man in the world. The lad wandered through the desert for forty days, and finally came upon a beautiful castle, high atop a mountain. It was there that the wise man lived.

Rather than finding a saintly man, thought, our hero, on entering the main room of the castle, saw a hive of activity :

tradesmen came and went, people were conversing in the corners, a small orchestra was playing soft music, and there was a table covered with platters of the most delicious food in that part of the world. The wise man conversed with everyone, and the boy had to wait for two hours before it was his turn to be given the man's attention. 

  

 

The wise man listened attentively to the boy's explanation of why he had come, but told him that he didn't have time just then to explain the secret of happiness. He suggested that the boy look around the palace and return in two hours.

Meanwhile, I want to ask you to do something, said the wise man, handling the boy a teaspoon that held two drops of oil.

As you wander around, carry this spoon with you without allowing the oil to spill. The boy began climbing and descending the many stairways of the palace, keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. After two hours, he returned to the room where the wise man was.  

 

Well, asked the wise man,did you see the Persian tapestries that are hanging in my dining hall? Did you see the garden that it took the master gardener ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful parchments in my library?' The boy was embarrassed, and, and confessed that he had observed nothing. His only concern had been not to spill the oil that the wise man had entrusted to him. Then go back and observe the marvels of my world, said the wise man. 'You cannot trust a man if you don't know his house. 

 

Relieved, the boy picked up the spoon and returned to his exploration of the palace, this time observing all of the works of art on the ceilings and walls. He saw the gardens, the mountains all around him, the beauty of the flowers, and the taste with which everything had been selected.

Upon returning to the wise man, he related in detail everything he had seen. But where are the drops of oil I entrusted to you? asked the wise man. Looking down at the spoon he held, the boy saw that the oil was gone.  

 

Well, there is only one piece of advice I can give you, said the wisest of wise men. The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world,

and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.
