애 너 밸 리

옛날 옛적 한 옛날

바닷가 한 왕국에

애나밸리 라는 한 소녀가 살았답니다;

그녀는 날 사랑하고

내게서 사랑 받는 것 외엔

아무것도 생각 없이 살았답니다.  

 

나도 그녀도 같이 어렸던 시절

바닷가 이 왕국에서;

허지만 우리는

사랑보다 더한 사랑으로 사랑을 했지요.

나와 나의 애너밸리;

하늘나라의 날개 달린 천사들도

시샘하는 사랑으로 말입니다.  

 

 

이것이 이유였지요,

오래전 바닷가 이 왕국에

바람이 구름을 몰아쳐

나의 아름다운 애너벌리를 싸늘히 앗아가고

그런 전차로

뼈대 있는 집안 어른들이 나서서

싸늘한 그녀마저도 빼앗아 가

바닷가 이 왕국의

무덤 속에 가둬 버렸지요.  

 

하늘나라 천사들마저도

우리의 절반도 행복하진 못 하였으니까요

그녀와 나를 부러워했지요  

 

 

아무렴

그것이 이유 였지요

-바닷가 이 왕국에서는 모두가 알고 있듯이-

밤이 되자 구름 속에서 바람을 보내어

나의 애너밸리를 싸늘한 죽음으로 몰아갔지요.  

 

그러나 우리의 사랑은

사랑이상으로 굳세었지요.

우리보다 나이든 이들의 사랑보다도

우리보다 현명한 이들의 사랑보다도

그리고 위로는 천국의 천사들도

밑으로는 바다 속의 악마들도

내 영혼을 아름다운 애너배리의 영혼에서

결코 떼어 놓을 수는 없었답니다.  

 

 

달빛 밤이면 어김없이 찾아드는 아름다운 너의 꿈

언제나 별빛 속에서도 너를 보는

빛마다 아름다운 눈매의 광채

밤새도록 나 여기 누워 있다네

바닷가 무덤 그곳.

철석 이는 바닷가 무덤 그 곁에

내 사랑, 내 사랑, 내 생명, 나의 신부 곁에  

 

 

한장 분량의 짧은 글이지만, "시" 라는 형식으로 '에드가 앨렌 포우'가 전해 주는 함축된 문장은 어쩌면 긴 스토리의 책 한권 "로미오와 주리엣"에 능가할 감동을 주고있다.

이 시는 포가 쓴 마지막 시로서 그의 시 경향을 가장 잘 나타낸다. 이 시에서의 애너벨 리는 그의 부인 버지니아를 가리킨다고 알려져 있다. 하지만 이 시는 그런 현실적인 상황을 초월해 그의 시적 상상력이 최대로 집중된 시로 평가된다.

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

by the name of Annabel Lee;

And this is maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.  

 

I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea;

But we loved with a love that was more than love,

I and my Annabel Lee;

With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven

Coveted her and me.  

 

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

My beautiful Annabel Lee;

So that her high-born kinsman came

And bore her away from me,

To shut her up in a sepulcher

In this kingdom by the sea.  

 

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,

Went envying her and me.  

 

Yes, that was the reason-as all men know,

In this kingdom by the sea-

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.  

 

But our love it was stronger far than the love

Of those that were older than we,

Of many far wiser than we.

And neither the angels in heaven above,

Nor the demons down under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee: 

 

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling, my darling, my life, and my bride,

In the sepulcher there by the sea,

In her tomb by the sounding sea.
